Walkers is recognized worldwide as a mark of excellence, known as a true Scottish classic. Even as the Walker family has expanded their product range, each item remains true to their values of quality and natural goodness. Walkers shortbread is made using only four simple ingredients - flour, pure creamy butter, sugar, and salt. Their products contain no artificial flavorings, colorings, or preservatives, and are even kosher certified.
The Walkers story began over a century ago in 1898, in the Scottish Highlands. The twenty-one-year-old Joseph Walker opened his own bakery with a £50 loan, determined to make the finest shortbread in the world. In the first year, Joseph dedicated every spare moment to perfecting his shortbread recipe, and his efforts paid off. As demand increased, he relocated to a larger shop in Aberlour and invested in a horse and cart to expand his delivery range.
During the 1930s, the business continued to grow, with Joseph's sons James and Joseph joining the company, bringing fresh ideas. By 1936, they had introduced cakes, confectionery, and the company's first delivery van, allowing Walkers products to reach even more customers.
While some manufacturers compromised by using margarine instead of butter, Joseph believed in the value of high-quality ingredients. Even after his passing in 1954, his sons upheld his original recipe. Demand continued to rise, and by 1961, the third generation of Walkers had joined the family firm.
By 1975, Walkers had outgrown their bakery and moved to a custom-built factory, enabling them to develop new products like Chocolate Chip Shortbread and specialty cookies. In the 1970s, Joseph's grandchildren began exporting Walkers shortbread to over 60 countries, still baking to the original recipe. Within a decade, they won three Queen's Awards for Export Achievement, the highest honor for British exporters.
Walkers has always maintained close connections with its customers, testing new products in the Aberlour village shop before releasing them worldwide. This commitment to quality and traditional recipes has made Walkers the choice of the most discerning customers and retailers.
Walkers' reputation continues to grow as loyal customers worldwide enjoy their classic shortbreads and innovative products like almond, ginger, and chocolate-covered shortbread. All Walkers' items are packaged in the company's iconic red tartan, bearing the image of Bonnie Prince Charlie and Flora MacDonald, capturing the tradition and care that goes into every piece of Walkers shortbread.
The quality and natural goodness of Walkers have earned them numerous international awards, including five gold Mondiale medals and the Food from Britain Innovation Award. As the family has evolved, they have remained true to Joseph Walker's original vision and recipe, ensuring that the fourth generation of Walkers continues to uphold the legacy of "The world's classic pure butter shortbread."
